Joshua Conrad Jackson is an Assistant Professor of Behavioral Science at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business. He serves as Co-Principal Investigator of the Chicago Culture Lab alongside Thomas Talhelm (Booth) and Shigehiro Oishi (Psychology Department).
Dr. Jackson's research program investigates cultural evolution of the human mind, with particular focus on how emotion, moral psychology, and religion co-evolve with large-scale societal changes. His work examines psychological transformations as societies become larger, more diverse, and interconnected through globalization. He employs innovative methodologies combining traditional psychological experiments with computational approaches and cross-cultural comparisons.
His research spans cultural psychology, cognitive science, and political psychology, addressing questions about:
- How emotion semantics vary across cultures while maintaining universal structures
- The relationship between automation exposure and religious decline
- How social media algorithms contribute to political polarization
- Psychological dynamics behind political leader support during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic
Dr. Jackson has received multiple prestigious awards:
- Sage Emerging Scholar Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology
- Dissertation Award from the Society for Experimental Social Psychology
- Society for Cross-Cultural Research's John and Beatrice Whiting Award
His academic journey includes a PhD in social psychology from UNC Chapel Hill and a B.A. in Psychology and East Asian History from McGill University. Prior to Chicago Booth, he was a DRRC postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern's Kellogg School and has held visiting positions at the University of Melbourne and Max Planck Institute.
Dr. Jackson teaches negotiation strategies and behavioral science courses at Booth while mentoring emerging scholars through the Chicago Culture Lab, which has supported researchers like Hongkai Mao (now at Stanford GSB) and Danila Medvedev (Kellogg postdoc).
