Joshua Brumberg serves as President of the CUNY Graduate Center and Professor in Psychology, Biology, Neuroscience, and Cognitive Neuroscience programs. With over 22 years at CUNY, he previously served as Dean for Sciences (2016-2023) and Acting Executive Director of the CUNY ASRC.
His research focuses on developmental neuroscience, examining how environmental experiences shape cortical circuitry using behavioral, physiological, and anatomical methods. Key research areas include sensory deprivation effects, barrel cortex organization, and neural mechanisms of cognition.
Professor Brumberg has published over 60 papers and secured significant NIH and NSF funding for his neurobiology research. His laboratory has contributed to understanding cortical development through publications in journals like Cerebral Cortex.
Notable honors include:
- Election as AAAS Fellow (2025)
- Leadership in securing $90M in external funding including a $75M Simons Foundation grant
- Instrumental role in achieving CUNY Graduate Center's Carnegie R1 research status
As an administrator, he oversees 11 STEM doctoral programs and champions diversity initiatives including NSF-funded programs for underrepresented students. His Laboratory of Cortical Circuitry provides research opportunities spanning neuroanatomy, physiology, and computational modeling of neural development.
