Dr. Joshua Bregy is an Assistant Professor at Clemson University's Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences Department within the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences. His interdisciplinary research combines sedimentology, dendrochronology, and isotopic analysis to reconstruct climate changes and extreme events during the Quaternary and Common Era, with particular focus on tropical cyclone dynamics and hydroclimatic hazards.
Education:
- Dual Ph.D. in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences & Geography, Indiana University (2021)
- M.S. in Marine Science (Geological Oceanography), University of Southern Mississippi (2016)
- B.A./B.S. in Spanish & Environmental Science, University of Central Arkansas (2013)
His work on US Gulf Coast tropical cyclone precipitation reveals connections to volcanism and the North Atlantic subtropical high, while developing novel proxy techniques for paleotempestology. Recent studies include streamflow variability analysis using bald cypress false rings and high-resolution spatial mapping of cyclone precipitation patterns from 1948-2015.
Current collaborations explore tree-ring blue intensity for temperature reconstructions, multi-proxy cyclone records from the Northern Gulf of Mexico, and isotopic tempestology across Atlantic and Pacific basins. The Longleaf Tree-Ring Network project expands dendrochronological applications in climate reconstruction.
