Joshua Blumenstock is Chancellor’s Associate Professor at UC Berkeley’s School of Information and Goldman School of Public Policy, and Faculty Co-Director of the Center for Effective Global Action. His research leverages big data and machine learning to address poverty and inequality in low-income countries. Key focus areas include poverty mapping, digital finance, humanitarian targeting, and data privacy. He employs mobile phone metadata, satellite imagery, and field experiments to study economic behavior and policy impacts.
Blumenstock has received the Schmidt Futures Innovation Fellowship, NSF CAREER Award, and Chancellor’s Award for Research in the Public Interest. His publications analyze machine learning applications in development economics, with recent work on violence-induced displacement in Afghanistan and algorithmic fairness in aid distribution. He directs the Global Policy Lab, advancing data-driven solutions for global challenges.
Education includes a PhD in Information Science and MA in Economics from UC Berkeley, and BA degrees in Computer Science and Physics from Wesleyan University.
