Joshua Billings is Professor of Classics and Comparative Literature at Princeton University, where he currently serves as Acting Chair of the Department of Classics. He joined Princeton in 2015 following a research fellowship at the University of Cambridge and teaching appointments at Yale University. His educational background includes studies in Classics, German, and Comparative Literature at Harvard University and the University of Oxford.
Billings' research centers on the intersection of ancient Greek literature (especially tragedy) with philosophy and intellectual history. Key areas include:
- The role of Greek drama as a form of pre-disciplinary philosophical thought
- Modern reinterpretations of tragedy in German philosophy (18th–19th century)
- Philological theory and practice, including ongoing work on Euripides' Hippolytus
- The evolution of tragic concepts from classical Athens to contemporary theory
His publications consistently explore Greek tragedy's philosophical dimensions, with recent works examining Sophistic thought (2023), dramatic dialectics in Athens (2021), and tragic modernity (2014–2018). As co-Editor-in-Chief of TAPA, he promotes emerging scholarship in Classics and supports graduate researchers.
Billings extends his academic mission through the Prison Teaching Initiative, delivering education beyond traditional university settings.
