Dr. Josh Secomb is a Lecturer in Exercise and Sport Science (Strength and Conditioning) at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He also serves as Strength and Conditioning Coach for Ice Hockey Australia's National Men's Team. His academic roles include coordinating courses such as Exercise Prescription, Functional Anatomy, and Surfing Performance Science within the College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing. Previously, he held casual academic positions at the University of Newcastle and Edith Cowan University, alongside coaching roles at Surfing Australia, Queensland Academy of Sport, and NSW Police.
Secomb holds a PhD in Sport Science (Strength and Conditioning) from Edith Cowan University and a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science (Honours) from the University of Newcastle. He is accredited as an Elite Level 3 Strength and Conditioning Coach (ASCA) and a Certified Performance and Sport Scientist (NSCA).
His research focuses on applied sport science, particularly hip and groin injury mechanisms in ice hockey, strength and conditioning methodologies for team sports, and physiological adaptations in surfing athletes. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles and presented at international conferences in the US, Australia, and Japan.
Secomb oversees PhD research on topics such as sprint deceleration analysis, military load carriage biomechanics, and enhancing female rugby league performance. His work integrates practical coaching experience with evidence-based scientific approaches to athlete development.
