Josh Durkee

Dr. Josh Durkee serves as a Professor and University Meteorologist at Western Kentucky University (WKU), holding the position of Vice Chair in the Department of Earth, Environmental, & Atmospheric Sciences within the Ogden College of Science & Engineering. He co-founded White Squirrel Weather (WSWX) in 2016 and launched the Disaster Science Operations Center (DSOC) in 2020, both student-driven initiatives focused on hyperlocal weather forecasting and all-hazards emergency management support. Durkee also directs the College Heights Atmospheric Observatory for Students (CHAOS) laboratory established in 2013, which utilizes advanced computing and observational technology.

Education includes a Ph.D. (2008) and M.S. (2003) in Geography (specializing in Atmospheric Science) from the University of Georgia, and a B.S. (2000) in Geography from Western Kentucky University with minors in Geology and Hydrology.

His research emphasizes severe weather climatology, mesoscale convective complexes (MCCs), and non-convective wind events. Specific interests include integrating satellite and radar data for precipitation estimation, modeling land-use impacts on thunderstorms, and developing educational tools for weather laboratories. He has received awards for innovative field-based learning methodologies such as the WKU Storm Chase course.

Professional roles include adjunct/visiting professorships at Fort Hays State University, leadership in the Meteorology Program Advisory Board, and directorship of CLIMLIST, a global climate discussion network. Durkee collaborates with FEMA, corporate entities like Beam-Suntory, and event organizers for weather consulting services. His work supports emergency management through disaster science certification programs and student advisement initiatives.
