Josephine C Ryan is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at The University of Texas at Arlington. Her academic background includes a PhD in Anthropology from Southern Methodist University (1996), an MPH in Public Health from the University of North Texas Health Science Center (2010), and earlier degrees in Anthropology from the University of Georgia (1976) and Southern Methodist University (1903).
Her research focuses on cross-cultural perspectives in gender studies, medical anthropology, and public health interventions. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in West Africa, including studies on Beninese cultural patterns and Gogo mothers’ breastfeeding practices. Ryan also examines global cultural dynamics and contemporary African cultures, with a particular emphasis on women’s political experiences and kinship systems.
Her teaching spans courses in global cultures, medical anthropology, gender studies, and indigenous North American cultures. She has presented at major conferences such as the Society for Applied Anthropology and the American Anthropological Association, delivering talks on topics ranging from ethnographic advocacy to the intersection of health and culture.
Notable works include Encountering the State: Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Women’s Political Experience (2012) and an evaluation of childhood obesity programs in Tarrant County (2008). Ryan’s academic contributions bridge anthropological theory with applied health initiatives, emphasizing culturally sensitive approaches to societal challenges.
