Dr. Joseph Williams is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Lead in Anthropology and Geography at Oxford Brookes University's School of Law and Social Sciences. He joined in 2017, previously holding positions at Aberystwyth University and Kansas State University. His research focuses on montane and tropical paleoecosystem ecology, with expertise in sediment core analysis, geochemical determination, and paleolimnological records. Fieldwork locations include the Andes (Bolivia/Ecuador), New Zealand, and North America.
Education includes a BSc from the University of Southampton (2006) and a PhD from the Open University (2011), followed by postdoctoral research at Kansas State University. He teaches modules such as Biogeography, Climate Change: The Physical Basis, and Advanced Research Skills for Geographers.
Research interests span long-term biogeochemical cycling, human-environment interactions, and terrestrial-freshwater system linkages. His work contributes to understanding Holocene climate impacts and ecosystem resilience, with over 15 peer-reviewed publications since 2011. He co-founded the Human Origins and Palaeo Environments (HOPE) research group at Oxford Brookes.
Publications emphasize multidisciplinary methods (e.g., PaCTS reporting standards) and cross-border collaborations. His field projects include Devils Lake (USA), Cayambe Volcano (Ecuador), and Kea Point (New Zealand), addressing flood reconstruction, microrefugia dynamics, and anthropogenic impacts.
