Joseph Wachelder

Dr. Joseph Wachelder is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Maastricht University, Netherlands. He holds academic positions in the MACCH - Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and is affiliated with the Maastricht University Science, Technology and Society Studies and the Netherlands Graduate Research School of Science, Technology and Modern Culture (WTMC). His career includes roles such as Chair of the FASoS Board of Examiners (2018–2024), Associate Dean of Education (2012–2015), and Programme Director for the BA Arts & Culture (2000–2002). He has served on numerous external boards and advisory councils, including the Limburgs Museum Venlo and Maastricht Science Shop.

Wachelder’s research focuses on the intersections of science, culture, and education, particularly through the lens of material artifacts, toys, and visual phenomena. His work examines how science interacts with popular culture, design, and education. Notable contributions include studies on the history of Dutch universities, science shops, and the cultural history of visual phenomena like afterimages.

His publications span over three decades, with recent works exploring modernization perspectives in Dutch universities, interactions between science and toys, and audience studies in media history. He has supervised numerous PhD and MA theses, including award-winning works by students such as M. te Hennepe (Praemium Erasmianum Foundation, 2008). His research also extends to the history of technology, including analyses of 18th-century toys and 17th-century automatons.

Wachelder actively engages in academic leadership and interdisciplinary collaboration, contributing to conferences and editorial boards. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary cultural and technological studies, emphasizing the role of material culture in shaping societal interactions with science.
