Joseph Torigian is an Associate Professor at the School of International Service, American University, and a Center Associate at the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies, University of Michigan. His research examines authoritarian regime politics through historical analysis of China and Russia.

Research Focus: Torigian investigates how authoritarian leaders manage elite power struggles and external threats using primary sources, rare books, and interviews. His work spans elite coercion tactics after Stalin/Mao, Xi Zhongxun's political legacy, and Cold War nuclear industrial complexes. Current projects analyze Soviet-Chinese military-industrial development with emphasis on civil-military dynamics and grand strategy formulation.
