Joseph Sramek is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Southern Illinois University. His research focuses on colonialism in British India under the East India Company, particularly examining gender, race, and British nationalism among expatriate communities. He received his B.A. from SUNY-Binghamton (1998) and Ph.D. from CUNY Graduate Center (2007).

Research Interests: His work explores the intersection of colonial governance with gender dynamics and racial hierarchies. Current projects include a study on British ethnic identity and nationalism in early Company India (1750–1857). His book Gender, Morality, and Race in Company India (2011) analyzes how colonial rule was shaped by these themes.
