Dr. Joseph Shrestha serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering Technology, Interior Architecture, and Surveying at East Tennessee State University. His expertise integrates advanced data analytics and geographic information systems with construction engineering to enhance project decision-making, cost management, and safety protocols across the industry.
Dr. Shrestha holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Iowa State University (2016), an M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Nevada Las Vegas (2013), and a B.E. in Civil Engineering from Tribhuvan University, Nepal (2010). His academic foundation spans computational methods, infrastructure systems, and sustainable construction practices.
His research specializes in Big Data Analytics for construction problem-solving, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications for project visualization, advanced construction technologies, cost and schedule estimation, market trend analysis, and safety optimization. He develops computational frameworks that transform raw construction data into actionable insights, bridging theoretical research with practical industry applications through machine learning and spatial analysis.
Analysis of his publication portfolio reveals a strong trajectory toward data-driven construction innovation, with recent work emphasizing automated pattern recognition in construction sequences, risk assessment for infrastructure projects, and GIS-integrated cost estimation tools. His research consistently addresses critical industry challenges including labor shortages, post-disaster reconstruction, and sustainable project management through quantitative methodologies.
Dr. Shrestha's scholarly contributions have been recognized through significant honors:
- CBAT Faculty Excellence Award for Research (2023)
- Associated Schools of Construction Proceedings Best Paper Award (2019)
- Top author in Data Storage Systems Commons (BePress, 2017)
- Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society membership (2014)
- Multiple transportation research grants from Iowa State University
As Principal Investigator, he has secured over $550,000 in research funding from the Tennessee Department of Transportation and ETSU for projects including road user cost calculation frameworks, risk assessment tools, and cost prediction models for resurfacing projects. His teaching portfolio spans construction fundamentals, estimating, scheduling, and thesis supervision, demonstrating active mentorship of the next generation of construction professionals through courses like ENTC 5960 Thesis and CONE 381/481 Bidding Construction Projects.
