Joseph S. Bender

Joseph S. Bender, DVM, serves as Associate Professor of Clinical Dairy Production Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine's New Bolton Center campus. Since joining PennVet in 2013, he provides on-farm consultations to Pennsylvania dairy farmers focused on enhancing production efficiency, economic profitability, and animal welfare for both cattle and producers.

Dr. Bender's research integrates veterinary clinical practice with agricultural economics, specializing in dairy production systems analysis. His work examines economic decision-making, crop-livestock integration strategies, nutritional optimization, reproductive management, and cost-of-production modeling. He has established significant research collaborations examining rumen microbiome dynamics, methane mitigation strategies, antibiotic residue education, and waste-to-feed conversion technologies.

His 2020-2022 publications reveal a strategic focus on sustainable dairy intensification through precision nutrition, environmental impact reduction, and economic resilience. Key themes include novel feed development from food waste streams, methane emission control via seaweed supplements, microbiome-resistome interactions in farm environments, and consumer perception studies regarding antibiotic use.

Dr. Bender mentors veterinary students through clinical rotations and the Dairy Medicine distance internship program while lecturing on production medicine, animal health economics, and dairy nutrition. His industry partnerships include financial institutions, CPA firms, feed mills, and agricultural extension services that utilize his economic modeling tools and herd management software systems.

Based at the New Bolton Center, he collaborates with the Center for Animal Health and Productivity on field studies across Pennsylvania dairy operations, focusing on translational research that bridges clinical diagnostics with farm-level economic decision support systems.
