Dr Joseph Powell is a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the Faculty of Divinity, University of Cambridge. His research fuses theological and anthropological methods to explore Rastafari spirituality, ecotheologies, and interdisciplinary intersections like faith and football.
- Studied Theology at the University of Exeter and completed MPhil and PhD in Theology and Religious Studies at Cambridge.
- Former Lecturer at Birmingham Newman University and Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham.
His work spans ethnographic studies of Rastafari communities in St Lucia, Jamaica, and the UK, focusing on dietary practices, soundscapes, and cosmological violence. He has convened courses such as 'Christianity and Food' and co-founded the Indigenous Studies Discussion Group.
- Editor of Holiness journal (Methodist theology and praxis) and former editor of Noesis, the Faculty of Divinity student journal.
- Awarded Fellow of the Higher Education Academy for innovative teaching and recognized as Teaching and Learning Fellow (2024) by the British Association for the Study of Religion.
