Dr Gavin Hopps is a Senior Lecturer in Literature and Theology at the University of St Andrews, affiliated with the School of Divinity. He serves as Director of the Institute for Theology, Imagination, and the Arts (ITIA). Previously, he held positions at the Universities of Aachen, Oxford, and Canterbury Christ Church, and was a CRASSH Visiting Fellow at the University of Cambridge. His research bridges theology and the arts, focusing on Romantic literature and contemporary popular music.
He teaches courses such as Theology and Imagination, Ecotheology and the Arts, and Music and the Sacred in Theory and Practice. His publications include works on Lord Byron, Taylor Swift, and interdisciplinary studies of art, music, and religion.
Dr Hopps supervises PhD students in theology and the arts and has led research projects funded by the Carnegie Trust and the British Academy. His work explores themes like religious experience, humor in literature, and the intersection of theology with popular culture.
