Dr. Joseph Pierce is a Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Aberdeen's School of Geosciences, Department of Geography and Environment. His work focuses on urban sustainability, housing equity, and justice, with a particular emphasis on community land trusts (CLTs) and their role in challenging urban property norms. He previously held faculty positions at the University of Oklahoma and Florida State University.
His research explores the intersection of place-making, racial geographies, and socio-political-economic alterity. Key themes include spatial pluralism, epistemic justice, and transformative urban models. Articles highlight collaborations with scholars like Melissa Pearsall, David G. Martin, and Mary Lawhon, spanning topics such as limited equity homeownership, urban governance shims, and critical metaphors in urban studies.
Dr. Pierce co-directs the University of Aberdeen's MA in Liberal Arts program and contributes to the Just Transitions Lab. He serves on multiple university committees, including the School of Geosciences Executive Committee and REF Committee.
