Joseph P. Mizgerd

Joseph P. Mizgerd is a Professor and Director of the Pulmonary Center at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. He holds academic appointments in Medicine, Biochemistry & Cell Biology, and Virology, Immunology & Microbiology. His research focuses on immunological mechanisms in lung defense against respiratory infections, particularly pneumonia. Mizgerd earned his B.A. from Amherst College and Sc.D. from Harvard School of Public Health.

His work investigates how innate and adaptive immune responses influence pneumonia susceptibility and outcomes, emphasizing coordinated cell interactions in the lung. He leads NIH-funded programs, including the 'Biology of the Lung' training grant and studies on fibrin in infected lungs, pneumonia sub-phenotypes, and lung-resident immunity.

Mizgerd directs the Pulmonary Center and collaborates across institutions, including the Evans Center for Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research. His research spans clinical, translational, and basic science, with over 150 publications. He mentors students and advises on grants, emphasizing lung immunology and translational medicine.
