Igor Kramnik, MD, PhD is an Associate Professor at Boston University's Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, with dual appointments in the Department of Medicine (Virology, Immunology & Microbiology) and the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories. He holds leadership roles in the Pulmonary Center, Evans Center for Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research, and the Genome Science Institute. His research focuses on genetic and immunological mechanisms controlling tuberculosis (TB) pathogenesis, host resistance pathways, and lung-specific immune responses.
Education: M.D. from Samara State Medical University (Russia) and Ph.D. from Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (Moscow, Russia). He has developed novel mouse models mimicking human TB granuloma formation to study disease progression and vaccine efficacy. Key work includes identification of the sst1 genetic locus and Ipr1 gene, which regulate necrosis in TB granulomas, and their roles in macrophage activation. Recent studies explore links between chronic TB infection and lung carcinogenesis, demonstrating M.tb's capacity to induce squamous cell carcinoma.
Research emphasizes host-directed therapies targeting macrophage dysfunction and iron-mediated pathways. He collaborates on projects involving live imaging of granulomas and systems genetics approaches to identify biomarkers (e.g., CXCL1) and therapeutic candidates (rocaglates). Current NIH-funded projects (2022-2027) investigate granuloma dynamics, necrosis mechanisms, and new TB treatment strategies.
Dr. Kramnik's work bridges basic science and clinical applications, addressing global health challenges posed by drug-resistant TB. His lab's innovations in mouse models and imaging protocols have advanced understanding of TB's complex host interactions.
