Joseph Ortiz is the Department Chair and the Dorrance D. Roderick Professor of English at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). He holds a BA in English and Mathematics from Yale University and a PhD in English Literature from Princeton University. His academic career includes roles as a postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University’s Society for the Humanities and faculty at SUNY Brockport before joining UTEP in 2012.
His research focuses on Renaissance and comparative literature, with a particular emphasis on the reception of classical texts in European literatures, the intersection of music and literature in early modern Europe, and 20th-century LGBTQ+ American literature. Recent work includes a Burkhardt Fellowship-supported project on translation in classical and Renaissance epic, conducted at the Folger Shakespeare Library.
