Joseph O. Jewell is a Professor and Department Head of Black Studies at the University of Illinois Chicago, within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on historical and comparative approaches to inequality, emphasizing intersections of race, class, and gender in the African diaspora. He holds a PhD from UCLA (1998), an MA from UCLA (1994), and a BA from UC Berkeley (1991).
His work examines cultural and legal responses to social mobility among racial minorities, including studies on middle-class formation in Black Atlanta and racialized class boundaries in cities like San Francisco and New Orleans. Current projects explore how racial narratives about mobility influenced U.S. regional hierarchies in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He serves on the editorial board of Social Science History.
Key publications include Race, Social Reform, and the Making of a Middle Class (2007) and articles analyzing educational access, urban sociology, and racialized class dynamics. His research bridges historical analysis with contemporary debates on race, class, and institutional racism.
