George Weddington is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of New Mexico. He earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Pittsburgh in 2022. His research examines racial justice struggles and racial domination in 20th-21st century America, using ethnographic and historical methods to analyze Black social movements.
His work focuses on how activists determine the racial nature of movements and how racial identity influences protest strategies. Research interests include:
- Dynamics of anti-Blackness in organizational contexts
- Mobilization/counter-mobilization patterns in racial justice movements
- Intersection of race and social movement theory
Publications demonstrate consistent focus on racial justice movements, with recent work examining BLM's evolution, environmental racism, and theoretical frameworks in race scholarship. Methodologically, his research employs historical analysis and ethnographic fieldwork to trace movement development.
