Joseph Nichols, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor at the School of Education, Saint Louis University. His research focuses on the historical and political contexts of schooling, particularly white backlash politics, race and segregation in American education, and civic education policy. He holds a Ph.D. in Social Studies Education from the University of Georgia, an M.A. in Public Affairs from Georgia College and State University, and a B.B.A. in Management from Mercer University.
His work examines how white backlash politics and policies have shaped schooling, particularly through segregation academies and resistance to integration. He has published widely in journals like Georgia Historical Quarterly, History Matters, and Education Policy Analysis and Archives, and is authoring a book on Georgia Governor Lester Maddox and white backlash politics, under contract with the University of South Carolina Press.
Key research themes include the civic mission of schools, the role of historical policies in shaping educational inequities, and qualitative research methods. His recent projects include analyzing white flight and segregation academies in the 1960s South and the integration of Atlanta’s public schools.
