Elizabeth Jemison is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Clemson University's College of Arts and Humanities. Her work bridges historical inquiry and theological analysis, focusing on intersections of race, gender, and politics in American Christianity.
Education:
- Ph.D., Harvard University
Research Interests center on the dynamics of race and religion in the post-emancipation South, Christian motherhood during segregation, and contemporary reckonings with white Christian racism. Her scholarship explores how religious communities navigate social and political transformations.
Publications include the monograph Christian Citizens, which analyzes racialized biblical interpretation in the 19th-20th century South. Current projects examine women's religious organizing and popular engagement with historical racism.
Awards and Grants include teaching accolades from Clemson's Provost and College of Arts and Humanities, as well as funding from the Whiting Foundation and Harvard’s Charles Warren Center. She was a 2015-2017 Young Scholar in American Religion.
