Joseph Michael Hyser

Joseph Michael Hyser is Associate Professor in the Department of Virology and Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine and Research Health Scientist at the Cleveland VA Medical Center. He investigates host-pathogen interactions in enteric viral infections, focusing on rotavirus mechanisms that disrupt calcium signaling and trigger inflammation.

His laboratory established that rotavirus NSP4 viroporin activity activates STIM1-dependent calcium release and characterized calcium signaling dysregulation during infection. Current work examines how microbial products like Fusobacterium nucleatum vesicles promote intestinal inflammation through intercellular signaling.

Research employs live-cell imaging, intestinal organoids, and molecular virology techniques to identify therapeutic targets for viral gastroenteritis and inflammation-related comorbidities.
