Joseph Manca serves as the Nina J. Cullinan Professor of Art and Art History at Rice University, where he holds a dual appointment in the Department of Art History. His scholarly expertise spans European and American art and architecture from 1300 to 1950, with concentrated research in Italian Renaissance, seventeenth-century Dutch painting, and American architectural history.

His methodology prioritizes recovering historical context through primary sources to reveal how art conveyed societal aspirations rather than flaws.
