Joseph Kuehl is an Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Delaware. He holds dual Ph.D.s in Mechanical Engineering (University of Rhode Island, 2009) and Oceanography (Graduate School of Oceanography, 2009), along with a B.S. in Physics from Michigan Technological University (2004). His research focuses on hypersonic boundary-layer stability, nonlinear vibrations, and geophysical fluid dynamics, including studies on the Gulf of Mexico and hypersonic transition phenomena. He has held postdoctoral roles at Texas A&M University and served in academic positions at Baylor University before joining UD in 2017.
- Education: PhDs in Mechanical Engineering & Oceanography (URI, 2009), BS Physics (MTU, 2004)
His research interests integrate computational fluid dynamics with environmental and aerospace applications, including hypersonic flow stability, time-series analysis of nonlinear systems, and Gulf of Mexico dynamics. He contributed to the Gulf Integrated Spill Research (GISR) consortia and developed the JoKHeR code for hypersonic boundary-layer studies.
He received the AFOSR Young Investigator Award (2015) and participates in National Academy of Sciences committees on Gulf Loop Current Dynamics and NATO STO working groups on hypersonic boundary-layer prediction. He serves as a Topic Board Editor for the journal Fluids.
- Professional Roles: Research Scientist (GERG, Texas A&M), Postdoc (Texas A&M), Baylor Assistant Professor
His work bridges aerospace engineering and geophysical fluid mechanics, addressing challenges in environmental fluid dynamics and high-speed flows. He collaborates with interdisciplinary teams and has advised on major consortia projects.
