Joseph Kopta is an Assistant Professor at Temple University within the Art History department of the Tyler School of Art and Architecture, specializing in Byzantine manuscripts and medieval Mediterranean studies. His work explores materiality, cross-cultural networks, and artistic practices across Byzantium, Africa, Venice, and caliphal courts.

Research Interests center on Byzantine Gospel Lectionaries, their material construction, and aesthetic qualities that create intermedial relationships with architectural interiors. He investigates poetry of Byzantine manuscripts through the “material turn” in art history, focusing on shiny, shimmering, and fluid sensory experiences.
