Joseph K Assan is a Senior Lecturer and faculty member in the Sustainable International Development Program at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Brandeis University. He holds a PhD from the University of Liverpool and a BS from the University of Cape Coast. Currently, he serves as the Associate Director for International Political Economy and Sustainable Development at the Center for Global Development and Sustainability. His career spans roles as Assistant Professor of Development Practice at Trinity College Dublin, Director of the International Development Program at the University of Liverpool, and Lecturer in International Development at the University of East London.

Dr. Assan's research focuses on the intersection of migration, sustainable livelihoods, environmental variability, and household well-being. He also investigates the impact of social protection programs on human security and poverty reduction. His work bridges theory, policy, and practice in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, with field experience in international development projects, including roles with the Global Hunger Project.

As Editor of CASTE: A Global Journal on Social Exclusion, he promotes scholarship on social exclusion. His affiliations include the African Studies Association, Development Studies Association, and Boston Network for International Development (BNID).
