Joseph J. Brown is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Department Chair at the University of Hawaii at Manoa's College of Engineering. He holds a PhD from the University of Colorado at Boulder (2010). His research focuses on nanotechnology, micro/nano devices, applied mechanics, and nanomanufacturing, with emphasis on advanced materials characterization and MEMS/NEMS systems. His work includes innovations in thermoacoustic nanobridges, interlocking cantilevers, and ALD-coated ultrathin films.
Research interests span nanomaterials mechanics, solid-state lithiation processes, and thermal actuation mechanisms. His lab (Nanosystems Lab) explores applications in energy storage, nanodevice fabrication, and nanostructure deformation. Notable contributions include studies on carbon nanotube strain analysis and flexible 3D nano-device fabrication using ALD on polyimide substrates.
Teaching responsibilities include courses such as Nanosystems Design (ME 448), Continuum Mechanics (ME 671), and graduate seminars. He advises on advanced nanotechnology topics and has collaborated on projects involving molecular layer deposition and MEMS test stages.
