Joseph Heathcott is a Professor of Urban Studies at The New School, specializing in urban spatial production, infrastructure, and cultural landscapes. His work examines cities through comparative and global perspectives, focusing on race, class, and redevelopment. He has held visiting roles at institutions like Sciences Po, Princeton, and the London School of Economics. His research spans urban history, planning theory, and photography as a research method. Notable publications include Global Queens: An Urban Mosaic (2023) and Urban Infrastructure (2022). Awards include the David Coffin Publication Prize and a Fulbright Distinguished Chair appointment. Heathcott advises on urban policy and curates exhibits linking urban design to social dynamics. He directs the Laboratory for Urban Spatial and Landscape Research, exploring post-industrial landscapes and migration studies.
Research Interests: Urban spatial production, infrastructure systems, urban design, and cultural landscapes. Current projects include studies on Queens’ post-pandemic geographies and Mexico City’s urban morphology.
