Joseph Harsh is an Associate Professor in the Biology Department at James Madison University (JMU) and Associate Director of the HHMI Inclusive Excellence Initiative since 2014. His research focuses on student experiences in postsecondary science, particularly data visualization literacy, mentorship dynamics, and the impact of Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs). He teaches foundational biology courses, graduate teaching seminars, and science education for future teachers.
- PhD in Science Education (2014, Indiana University)
- MS in Botany and Plant Pathology (2003, Michigan State University)
- BS in Biology (2000, Indiana University)
Harsh’s scholarly work examines how students navigate scientific challenges, develop data interpretation skills, and engage with inclusive teaching practices. His recent publications emphasize scalable CURE implementations, graphical literacy frameworks, and mentorship quality in life sciences. He also investigates cognitive processes in data visualization and equity-oriented pedagogies.
His research group’s projects include designing CUREs for Salmonella genomics, DNA barcoding curricula, and longitudinal studies on student engagement. He advocates for evidence-based teaching strategies that support diverse learners, including non-science majors.
