Dr. Joseph Gonzalez serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Cultural, Gender and Global Studies within Appalachian State University's College of Arts and Sciences. He teaches across multiple academic units including the Watauga Residential College, Interdisciplinary Studies program, Global Studies program, and the Honors College, with a particular focus on Cuba through regular study abroad programs.
Professor Gonzalez earned his Ph.D. in History from the University of Michigan and has been a faculty member at Appalachian since 2003. His educational background informs his specialized research on US-Cuba relations, particularly during the critical period from 1895-1917.
Gonzalez's research interests center on Cuban history and US-Cuba relations, with his principal work being the book Facing the Sun: Cuba's Challenge to the American Empire, 1895-1917.
