With a Ph.D. from Sheffield University and Master's and Bachelor's degrees from the Catholic University of America, he has extensive experience working with both the American military and European automobile industry.
His research focuses on Human Centred Design, Design For Meaning, Perception Enhancement, and Automotive Design. His work aims to create products, systems and services that are physically, perceptually, cognitively and emotionally intuitive, often unlocking latent needs and desires to support desired societal futures. His research spans from basic structured empathy approaches to advanced applications in autonomous vehicles, food services and healthcare.
Professor Giacomin has produced over 120 publications including influential books such as "Humans And Autonomous Vehicles", "Automotive Human Centred Design Methods" and "Thermal - seeing the world through 21st century eyes". His publication trends show a clear trajectory from foundational work in human factors and ergonomics toward increasingly sophisticated applications of human centered design principles in emerging technologies, particularly autonomous vehicles and emotionally intelligent systems.
Among his notable achievements:
- Fellow of the Chartered Institute Of Ergonomics & Human Factors (CIEHF)
- Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA)
- Member of the Associazione Per Il Disegno Industriale (ADI)
- Member of the Royal Photographic Society (RPS)
- Editorial board member of Ergonomics and International Journal Of Vehicle Noise And Vibration
Professor Giacomin actively supervises PhD students in areas including Design for Meaning, Naturalness of autonomous vehicles, Design fictions, and Trust In Autonomous Vehicles. His research group (IMM) focuses on integrating multidisciplinary expertise to enhance human well-being through design. His teaching activities include courses in Human Centred Design, Design For Meaning, Human Factors In Design, and Perception Enhancement.
