Joseph E. Ravenell, MD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Population Health and Department of Medicine at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He also serves as Associate Dean for Professional Development and Director of Diversity in Research at the Perlmutter Cancer Center. His research focuses on hypertension, cancer, and health equity, with a particular emphasis on addressing social needs and disparities in healthcare access. Dr. Ravenell holds an MD from the University of Chicago, completed residency in Internal Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and a fellowship in General Internal Medicine/Clinical Epidemiology at Weill Cornell Medical College.
His clinical trials include explorations of preventive care transformations for low socioeconomic status populations and the Community-to-Clinic Program targeting hypertension in Black men. Key research themes are reflected in his publications on breast cancer navigation programs, community engagement strategies, and shared decision-making in prostate cancer screening.
Dr. Ravenell is actively involved in initiatives such as the CHURCH trial, aiming to reduce colorectal cancer and cardiovascular disease disparities through community health workers. He emphasizes social marketing and faith-based partnerships to advance health equity, particularly in underserved populations.
