Joseph E. Goodwill is the Carroll D. & Charles M. Billmyer Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Rhode Island. His research spans physical-chemical treatment processes, water reuse innovations, and international water-poverty solutions, with a focus on ferrate chemistry and nanomaterial applications.
- Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering (2015), M.S. in Environmental Engineering (2006), and B.S. in Civil Engineering (2004) from the University of Massachusetts and Lafayette College.
Current research explores antifragility in water systems, satellite-based water quality monitoring, and sustainable approaches to acid mine drainage. His 2021 NSF CAREER Award and 2024 Fulbright Scholarship highlight his contributions to innovative water treatment methods. Recent publications emphasize the role of activated ferrate in disinfection, fluoride/arsenic removal using metal-organic frameworks, and operational complexities in water infrastructure under climate stress.
- Co-PI on multi-institutional grants (Iowa State University, Brown University) for Martian water reuse and small-system water sustainability.
- Labs: Water for the World Lab at the Fascitelli Center for Advanced Engineering, Room 340.
