Joseph Dorta is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the United States Military Academy at West Point. His work bridges pure and applied mathematics, with a focus on geometric representation theory, hyperplane arrangements, and their applications in robotics and education.
- Ph.D., Mathematics, Louisiana State University (2024)
- M.S. and B.S., Mathematics, University of Georgia
Dorta’s research in pure mathematics centers on geometric representation theory and hyperplane arrangements, while his applied mathematics projects explore motion planning for UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems), topological robotics, and algebraic reasoning in teaching. He also investigates connections between mathematics and art, particularly in the work of Vladimir Nabokov.
His recent work includes the publication Monoidal structures on generalized polynomial categories (2023), which explores algebraic structures in category theory. Other projects in preparation, such as extending the modular Springer correspondence to symplectic groups and studying hyperplane arrangement detectability, highlight his interdisciplinary approach.
At West Point, Dorta serves as an Officer representative for the men’s handball team, demonstrating his engagement beyond research.
