Joseph De Lappe is a Professor of Games and Tactical Media at Abertay University in Dundee, Scotland, since 2016. Previously, he directed the Digital Media Studio at the University of Nevada, Reno (founded in 1993). He holds an MFA from San Jose State University’s CADRE Institute (1990). His work bridges digital art, performance, and activism, addressing themes like drone warfare, military conflict, and social justice.
Key projects include dead-in-iraq (typing U.S. military casualties into an online game) and Killbox (a game critiquing drone warfare, Bafta-nominated 2016). He also led iraqimemorial.org, an archive of proposed civilian memorial proposals. His 2013 solo project involved drawing a 460-mile chalk line around a solar farm site in Nevada.
Research interests span digital art’s role in activism, participatory media practices, and critical interventions in gaming culture. Awards include a 2017 Guggenheim Fellowship. Collaborations include the Biome Collection and exhibitions at venues like Eyebeam (NYC), Guangdong Museum of Art, and ICC Tokyo.
