He holds a PhD in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2003), preceded by an M.S. in Environmental Studies, M.A. in History, and B.S. in Natural Resources. His research bridges early American social, economic, environmental, and technological history, with a focus on amphibious colonial development and maritime empire dynamics. He is completing revisions for his monograph Work upon the Ark: New England Shipbuilding and the Launching of the British Maritime Empire, challenging traditional land-water divides in Atlantic history.
Prof. Cullon has served as an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellow at the American Antiquarian Society (2005-2006) and the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture (2008-2009). His teaching philosophy emphasizes history as a living inquiry with moral and present-day relevance. He has taught at MIT, Dartmouth College, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison before joining WPI.
His scholarly works include an upcoming Wiley-Blackwell documents collection on the American Revolution and contributions to industrial history studies of the Blackstone Valley. He actively engages in digital humanities and environmental history initiatives.
