Joseph Clarkson is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and the Program of Liberal Studies at the University of Notre Dame. His research and teaching interests lie at the intersection of political theory and international relations, with a focus on the history of political thought, German political thought, and sovereignty.
His educational background:

Clarkson's primary research examines debates over constitutionalism and the state in the German-speaking world during the interwar period. His dissertation recovers Hermann Heller's account of political unity in the modern state, placing it in critical dialogue with Carl Schmitt's constitutional theory. He also explores theories of war and peace in the history of European political thought, addressing the causes of war and the foundations of democratic self-defense.
