Reverend Joseph Cheah, Ph.D., is a Professor of Theology and Religious Studies and Chair of the Department of Philosophy, Theology, and Religious Studies at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ). He joined USJ in 2005 and holds a Ph.D. from the Graduate Theological Union, alongside advanced degrees from institutions such as the Franciscan School of Theology and the University of Southern California. His research focuses on Asian American religions, Buddhist Studies, race and religion, and World Christianity. Cheah is the author of seminal works such as Race and Religion in American Buddhism (2011) and Anti-Asian Racism (2023), which have been widely praised for their critical insights.
Cheah is a sought-after speaker on topics including anti-Asian racism and Catholic Social Teaching. He has contributed to national dialogues through affiliations such as the Asian Pacific American Religious Research Initiative, the American Academy of Religion, and the Society of Race, Ethnicity, and Religion. His teaching philosophy emphasizes collaborative learning, integrating personal narratives and interdisciplinary perspectives to foster inclusive dialogue.
He received the Sister Mary Ellen Murphy Faculty Scholarship Award (2018) for his exceptional scholarly contributions. Cheah’s academic service includes roles at the Office for Catholic Social Justice Ministry and the Children Charitable Foundation of Myanmar. His courses, such as Religion and Race in the U.S. and World Christianity, reflect his commitment to addressing contemporary social and theological challenges.
