His research explores themes of nature, environment, materiality, and more-than-human perspectives in music, with a particular interest in musical organicism and vitalism within the UK contemporary music scene. Dr Browning is also an active performer of traditional and contemporary shakuhachi music and has collaborated with composers and choreographers. He studied Javanese gamelan in Indonesia as a Darmasiswa scholar and has performed with gamelan groups across Australia, the UK, and Indonesia.

He has held postdoctoral research positions at the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions (University of Melbourne) and as a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Oxford and St Hilda's College. He previously served as a Teaching Fellow and Senior Teaching Fellow at SOAS, University of London. His work bridges academic research, artistic practice, and interdisciplinary inquiry into music’s ecological and social dimensions.
