Joseph Boll is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), affiliated with the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. His research focuses on understanding antibiotic resistance mechanisms in Gram-negative bacteria, particularly Acinetobacter baumannii and Mycobacterium abscessus. He leads the Boll research group, investigating bacterial cell envelope modifications that enable resistance to last-line antibiotics like colistin and carbapenems.
Education:

- PhD in Molecular Biosciences (Microbiology) from University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (2013)
- Postdoctoral training in Microbiology/Synthetic Biology at University of Texas at Austin (2017)
Research Interests: Dr. Boll’s work spans antibiotic tolerance mechanisms, lipid A modifications, outer membrane integrity, and peptidoglycan recycling. He uses advanced techniques like lipidomics, high-throughput sequencing, and mass spectrometry to uncover how pathogens survive antibiotic stress. Current projects include studying compensatory mutations in penicillin-binding proteins and phosphate limitation-driven lipid synthesis in ESKAPE pathogens.
