Joseph Bognar is the Frederick A. and Mazie N. Reddel (Associate) Professor of Music and Chair of the Department of Music at Valparaiso University. He teaches music theory, piano, and serves as Associate University Organist. His administrative roles include Chair of the Department of Music (2009-2018), Chair of the Education Policy Committee (2016-18), and Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee (2021-present). He is also President of Pi Kappa Lambda (national music honor society) and a visiting team member for the National Association of Schools of Music.
Education:
- Bachelor’s in piano and organ from Valparaiso University (summa cum laude)
- Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Performance and Literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, studying under John Wustman with university fellowships
Research/Performance:
- Interdisciplinary work combining music with STEM fields, including co-teaching a computational music course with the Computer Science department and mentoring projects in music-engineering-mathematics collaborations
- Founder of ValpLork, Valparaiso University’s first laptop orchestra
- Notable performances: solo and chamber music across the U.S., Europe, and Asia, including works by Rzewski and Ives. Collaborations with pianist Nicole Lee and the Castillon Piano Trio (BBC radio featured)
Labs/Teams: ValpLork, an interdisciplinary laptop orchestra emphasizing technology in music performance and composition.
