Joseph B. Kuhns is a Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at the University of North Carolina Charlotte. He teaches policing, community policing, drugs and crime, and research methods. Prior to joining UNC Charlotte in 2003, he served as a Senior Policy Analyst at the U.S. Department of Justice (Office of Community Oriented Policing Services). His research focuses on police use of deadly force, drug-crime relationships, and burglary dynamics. He has collaborated internationally, including with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Services to reduce violent crime. His co-edited book on global police use of force earned a 2010 Choice Award.
Key research interests include: police training and legitimacy, community policing efficacy, drug-related crime, and offender motivations. Recent projects involve process-mapping homicide investigations and evaluating immersive use-of-force training impacts on citizen attitudes. He actively works with law enforcement agencies to improve practices and enhance safety.
