Joseph A. Dearani

Dr. Joseph A. Dearani is a Professor of Surgery and Director of Pediatric and Adult Congenital Heart Surgery at Mayo Clinic. He specializes in congenital heart disease, robotic surgery, valve repair, and heart transplantation. His academic roles include chairing the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery (2011-2020) and leading national organizations like the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (2020).

Education: BA in Biology/Spanish (Fordham University, 1982), MD (Georgetown University, 1986). Surgical training includes residencies at Georgetown University, Mayo Clinic, and a fellowship at Loma Linda University.

Research focuses on valve repair techniques, regenerative medicine, and minimally invasive approaches. Awards include the Mayo Clinic Distinguished Clinician Award and the Children’s HeartLink Founders Award. He holds leadership roles in over 20 professional societies.
