Joseph A Formaggio is a Professor of Physics at MIT, affiliated with the MIT Laboratory for Nuclear Science (LNS) and MIT Center for Quantum Engineering (CQE). His research focuses on neutrino physics, exploring fundamental properties like mass and interactions through experimental approaches. He leads the Formaggio Group, developing novel detector technologies such as cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy and cryogenic bolometers.
Dr. Formaggio holds a B.S. in Physics from Yale University (1996) and a Ph.D. in Physics from Columbia University (2001). He joined MIT in 2005 after postdoctoral work at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO), where his contributions helped resolve the solar neutrino problem. Key experiments include KATRIN, Project 8, Ricochet, and CUPID, aiming to measure neutrino mass and study coherent neutrino scattering.
His research interests span neutrino mass measurement, quantum sensor applications, and detector development. Notable collaborations include work with Prof. Lindley Winslow on CUPID and the NuDM consortium at MIT. Awards include the 2019 APS Fellowship and the 2016 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics.
Dr. Formaggio’s lab group focuses on advancing experimental techniques, such as quantum readout systems and cryogenic detectors, to probe neutrino properties and dark matter interactions. Ongoing projects like Ricochet aim to detect reactor neutrinos via coherent scattering, while Project 8 employs cyclotron radiation to analyze beta decay electrons.
