Josef Schmid is a Full Professor of Political Economics and Comparative Policy Analysis at the University of Tübingen's Institute for Political Science and has been the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences since 2010. He previously served as a university lecturer at Ruhr-University Bochum and earned his PhD from the University of Konstanz. His research focuses on comparative welfare states, labor/educational policy, political parties, and organizational studies. He co-coordinates the interdisciplinary HELP initiative on gerontology and leads several research groups, including the post-graduate program on international comparative education policy.
He has held university administrative roles such as Senate Commission member and Dean of Studies (2004-2009). Key research areas include welfare state development, federalism dynamics, and the role of political parties. His recent work addresses demographic change, pension systems, and the digital transformation of welfare states across Europe.
Publications span welfare policy analysis, political organization studies, and comparative political economy. He actively contributes to policy debates through roles like spokesperson for the post-graduate education policy program and membership in research institutes like the European Federalism Research Center.
