Josef Peter Helmut Oehmen

Josef Peter Helmut Oehmen is an Associate Professor at the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, College of Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (DTU). He is the founder and coordinator of the Engineering Systems RiskLab at DTU and co-founded DTU's Engineering Systems Group as well as MIT's Consortium on Engineering Program Excellence (CEPE).

His academic qualifications include:

• PhD in Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Management from ETH Zurich (2006-2009)
• MBA from Collège des Ingénieurs, Paris (2005-2006)
• Master in Mechanical Engineering from Technical University of Munich (2000-2005)

Oehmen's research focuses on designing and managing large-scale engineering programs, with special emphasis on risk, uncertainty, and ignorance. His work spans several key areas including risk management, design thinking, engineering systems, lean management, and program management. He brings a design and risk management perspective to improving collaboration in project management and systems engineering, working on advanced risk quantification methods, resilient engineering principles, lean risk management, and risk-informed leadership. His fingerprint research areas include Risk Management (100%), Product Development (58%), Global Sourcing (26%), Strategy Implementation (26%), and Danish studies (26%).

His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on the green transition, particularly examining risk management in sustainable engineering projects, resilience in energy systems, and adaptive governance frameworks for large-scale infrastructure. He has developed paradigm-shifting risk management techniques specifically for the design, construction and operation of Engineering Systems.

Oehmen actively supervises PhD students and leads multiple research projects focused on risk management in engineering contexts. He co-chairs the INCOSE Lean Systems Engineering Working Group and founded and co-chairs the Design Society's Special Interest Group on Risk Management Processes and Methods. He is also a member of the board of IDA Risk. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals including sustainable development and climate action.
