Josef Focht is a Professor of Organology at Leipzig University, heading the Digital Organology Research Center at the Museum of Musical Instruments. The museum houses the internationally renowned Heyer Collection—the only university museum of musical instruments in the German-speaking world since 1926—supporting interdisciplinary teaching, research, and knowledge transfer.
His research spans organology, digital humanities, and museum studies, with emphasis on provenance research related to GDR history and museum archives. Key projects include the study of Hoffmann family string/plucked instruments, MIMO (Musical Instrument Museums Online), the Lexicon of Leipzig Music, Central/Eastern European instrument making traditions, Freiberg Cathedral instruments, East Asian instruments, and automatons. He develops transdisciplinary data repositories and digital tools for cross-collection documentation and collection indexing.
Focht leads the Digital Organology Research Center, advancing methodologies for global organological research through digital innovation while preserving historical instrument heritage.
